elmont moves at the pace of a town that's still figuring out what it wants to be. On a weekday morning, Main Street is quiet enough that you can hear the freight train cross the trestle two blocks over. By Friday evening in summer, the Stowe Park bandshell pulls half the town in — kids running on the lawn, neighbors finding each other, the heat finally breaking around eight.
What gives Belmont its rhythm is the river. The Catawba bends through the eastern edge of town, and the riverwalk has become the place where people actually walk — early-morning runners, parents with strollers, the dog-walking crowd at dusk. Belmont Abbey College gives the south end its own cadence; in autumn the campus lights come on early and you can hear the bells from a few blocks away.
The brick-bungalow streets between Main Street and the river hold most of the town's character — sidewalks lined with magnolias, porches that get used, families who stay long enough that the kids who started kindergarten at Belmont Central walk across the South Point High stage twelve years later. People who move to Belmont tend to stay.
Where the kids in Belmont go to school.
elmont feeds into Gaston County Schools, with elementary catchments splitting between the south side (Belmont Central, with K–1 students attending J. B. Page Primary first) and the north side (Catawba Heights, PK–5 in one stop). Both streams converge at Belmont Middle, then on to South Point High.
How the scores work
Each chart shows a school’s shape across three or four scored dimensions. The shape matters more than the overall size — same overall rating, different shape, different fit.
- Overall rating (X/10)
- GreatSchools' composite score next to each school name — combines academic results, growth, equity, and college readiness on a 1–10 scale.
- Growth
- How much kids improve year-over-year, regardless of where they started. Strong growth means strong teaching adds real value over time.
- Outcomes
- Current academic level — how kids are testing right now on state assessments. High outcomes mean kids are at or above grade level.
- College Prep
- Postsecondary readiness for high schools only — AP/IB participation, SAT/ACT scores, graduation rates. Skipped on elementary and middle charts.
- Community
- Parent satisfaction from GreatSchools reviews, rescaled to a 1–10 axis. Captures school culture and family experience that test scores miss.

Places worth knowing in Belmont.
Park
01
Stowe Park & Bandshell
Belmont’s social spine. Friday-night summer concerts at the bandshell pull half the town. Two blocks from Main Street, walkable from most of downtown.
Recreation
02
Catawba River Walk
Riverfront walking and biking trail along the eastern edge of town. Calm water, wildlife, and the Charlotte skyline visible on clear days from a few vantage points.
Institution
03
Belmont Abbey College
Small private Catholic college anchoring the south end of town. The campus rhythm gives that part of Belmont a college-town feel without the noise of a state-school campus.
Landmark
04
Reflection Pointe
Gated waterfront community on Lake Wylie’s eastern edge. Most of Belmont’s seven-figure homes live here, with deep-water lots and main-channel views.
Landmark
05
Cramer Mountain
Belmont’s country-club enclave on the western edge — established homes, a top-tier course, and a residents-only quiet that the rest of town doesn’t get.

What I tell people considering Belmont: it's the small-town-near-Charlotte that hasn't finished re-pricing yet. Walkable Main Street, real Catawba River and Lake Wylie waterfront, fifteen minutes to the airport, and a single-feeder K-through-12 school path that families build a decade around. You're still under inner-ring Charlotte pricing — but that gap is closing every spring.
The honest caveat: Belmont is small. The dining scene is growing but it isn't Plaza Midwood; the cultural calendar is Friday-night bandshell concerts and a few seasonal events, not a city's worth of options. If you need urban density, you'll want Charlotte. If you'd trade urban density for a town where you'll know your neighbors' names within a year, Belmont delivers.
If you're looking at Belmont, my door is open most weekdays — no appointment needed.
