Belmont

Belmont moves at the pace of a town that's still figuring out what it wants to be. On a weekday morning, Main Street is quiet enough that you can hear the freight train cross the trestle two blocks over. By Friday evening in summer, the Stowe Park bandshell pulls half the town in — kids running on the lawn, neighbors finding each other, the heat finally breaking around eight.

What gives Belmont its rhythm is the river. The Catawba bends through the eastern edge of town, and the riverwalk has become the place where people actually walk — early-morning runners, parents with strollers, the dog-walking crowd at dusk. Belmont Abbey College gives the south end its own cadence; in autumn the campus lights come on early and you can hear the bells from a few blocks away.

The brick-bungalow streets between Main Street and the river hold most of the town's character — sidewalks lined with magnolias, porches that get used, families who stay long enough that the kids who started kindergarten at Belmont Central walk across the South Point High stage twelve years later. People who move to Belmont tend to stay.
